Neck Pain: More Than Just a Stiff Neck

Neck November 6, 2025

Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain, or cervical pain, can range from a mild stiffness to sharp, radiating discomfort that travels into the shoulders, arms, or upper back. It can develop suddenly due to injury or gradually from poor posture, repetitive strain, or degenerative changes in the cervical spine.

Neck pain can affect your daily activities, limit movement, disrupt sleep, and impact your overall quality of life. While most cases are not serious, chronic or severe pain warrants assessment by a healthcare professional.

Signs and Symptoms

Neck pain may present in a variety of ways and often goes beyond simple stiffness:

  • Persistent or intermittent aching in the neck
  • Sharp, stabbing, or burning sensations that may radiate into the shoulders or arms
  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms or hands
  • Limited range of motion – difficulty turning, tilting, or extending your neck
  • Headaches or tension originating from the base of the skull
  • Muscle tightness or spasms in the neck, shoulders, or upper back
  • Discomfort that worsens with certain activities or prolonged posture

Recognizing these signs early can help prevent chronic issues and guide you toward effective treatment.

Possible Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can result from a variety of factors, including:

Muscle strain: Poor posture, repetitive movements, or overuse
Injury or trauma: Whiplash from car accidents or sports injuries
Degenerative changes: Osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, or spinal stenosis
Nerve compression: Herniated discs or bone spurs pressing on nerves
Stress & tension: Tightening neck and shoulder muscles due to stress

Other causes: Sleeping in awkward positions, carrying heavy bags, or underlying health conditions

How Neck Pain is Managed or Treated

The goal of treatment is to reduce pain, restore motion, and prevent recurrence.

Physical & Occupational Therapy at MOSS:

Physical therapy: Strengthens neck muscles, improves flexibility, and corrects posture
Occupational therapy: Helps you adjust daily activities, workstations, and movement patterns
Hands-on care: Manual therapy to relieve tight muscles and joints
Targeted rehabilitation plans: Customized programs to restore neck stability and mobility

Other treatments may include:

  • Pain medication or muscle relaxers (if needed)
  • Cold or heat therapy
  • Alternative therapies like massage or dry needling (if appropriate)

Most cases improve significantly without surgery when therapy is started early.

What You Can Do at Home

Safe home remedies:

Heat therapy: Warm compress or shower to loosen muscles
Cold therapy: Ice packs for inflammation after acute injury
Posture breaks: Adjust seating, take short movement breaks at work
Stress reduction: Meditation, breathing exercises, and yoga
Quit smoking: Smoking slows healing and can accelerate degenerative changes.

Sleep Positions for Your Neck

Proper sleeping posture can prevent strain:

On your back: Use a pillow to support the natural curve of your neck; place a pillow  under your knees to relieve back pressure.

On your side: Pillow should keep your neck aligned with your spine, not bending forward or backward.

Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it forces the neck to twist unnaturally.
