5 Common Low Back Pain Misconceptions

Lower Back December 4, 2025

Fast Fact

In 2020, low back pain affected 619 million people worldwide, is projected to rise to 843 million by 2050, and prevalence increases with age up to 80 years, with the highest number of cases occurring between 50–55 years (WHO)

Misconception 1 – “Rest is the best treatment”

Many people believe that lying down and avoiding activity will help their back heal. While short-term rest may relieve pain initially, prolonged inactivity can weaken muscles, reduce flexibility, and slow recovery. Gradual movement and guided activity are essential for proper healing.

Misconception 2 – “Pain equals damage”

Back pain doesn’t always mean there’s a serious injury. Muscle tension, joint stiffness, and postural imbalances can all trigger discomfort without structural damage. Understanding this helps reduce fear and promotes proactive management.

Misconception 3 – “Only surgery can fix my back pain”

Many people believe that recurring low back pain inevitably means surgery is the only solution. The truth is, most cases can be effectively managed with physical therapy, occupational therapy, dry needling, and Deep Tissue Laser Therapy. These targeted treatments address the root causes like stiffness, weakness, and joint imbalances rather than just masking pain.

Misconception 4 – “Quick fixes solve the problem”

Temporary measures like medications, ice/heat, or even chiropractic adjustments may relieve pain, but they don’t address the underlying cause.

For a deeper dive into why quick fixes fall short, watch our video on Why Quick Fixes Don’t Solve Low Back Pain.

Misconception 5 – “Low back pain only happens to older adults”

Low back pain can occur at any age, including teenagers and young adults, especially with prolonged sitting, heavy lifting, or repetitive movements. Early intervention is key to preventing chronic issues.

How Low Back Pain is Managed or Treated

At MOSS Rehabilitation Center, we emphasize physical and occupational therapy to address low back pain effectively.

Phase 1 – Pain and Inflammation Relief: Manual therapy, massage, and deep tissue laser to reduce discomfort.

Phase 2 – Mobility & Core Strength: Focused exercises for the lumbar spine, hips, and thoracic region to restore movement.

Phase 3 – Functional Recovery: Daily activities like bending, lifting, or rolling in bed become easier.

Phase 4 – Maintenance & Injury Prevention: Ongoing exercise and spine hygiene reduce the risk of recurrence.

Phase 5 – Performance Enhancement: Return to sports, work, or daily tasks with full confidence.
