Today we highlight a client who has been with MOSS for several “rounds” of therapy for various conditions.
She is extremely active and wants to stay that way. She also understands that physical therapy is a “contact sport” and you have to work hard to get your desired results.
Her ultimate goal was to get back to gardening and yard work.
Today I want to introduce you to Sandy. She is very sweet and is probably one of the most proactive patients I have. When Sandy discovers an issue that doesn’t seem to be going away she gives us a call.
Usually she is doing better within a few sessions, quickly moving through The MAGICAL 5 Phases of Healing with the goal of Phase 5 Performance Enhancement.
Here is a quick review:
What are The MAGICAL 5 Phases of Healing?
Phase 1: Minimize Pain and Inflammation – This phase is all about getting you and keeping you out of pain. We want you to be able to enjoy life and not be constantly taking a painkiller just to live life every day.
Phase 2: Restore Mobility, Flexibility, and Strength: This phase is where we rebuild your physical abilities so you can enjoy your favorite activities without pain and worry. We rebuild your confidence in your body’s ability to do what you want without injury.
Phase 3: Return to Normal Function and Activity: This phase is our favorite because it means that you are back to your normal, pre-injury, or surgery self. You’re free to go about your day and smile knowing everything is healed!
Phase 4: Maintenance and Injury Prevention: Now that you’re healed, we want to keep you that way. This phase is all about making sure you don’t have a repeat injury and keeping your body strong and healthy.
Phase 5: Performance Enhancement: Why settle for normal? During this phase, we help you improve and go beyond what you were able to do before your injury or surgery. We want to help you be the best you can be!
If you stick with your plan and follow the 5 MAGICAL phases of healing, you could see results just like Sandy. Here’s her story in her own words:
“I Just Wanna Get Back To My Garden”
Sandy’s story.
Sandy suffered some back pain which was irritated by doing some yard work. As she completed her chores for the day she bent over to take off her socks and that is when it happened.
She felt a sharp pain in her lower back and right leg. This wasn’t her first round of back pain so she knew immediately something was wrong.
She was able to walk inside to start some home treatments however after a few days of inactivity, rest, ice, heat and over the counter medications the pain hadn’t gone away.
Knowing how active she wanted to be and seeing that her pain was still present she decided to do something about it.
That is when she called MOSS Rehabilitation Center for some help.
When Sandy first came to therapy she was barely walking without assistance, had a hard time sitting, getting out of bed and doing her normal daily tasks including housework, gardening and driving.
She was definitely in Phase I and needed help.
Because Sandy was proactive in her back health she progressed quickly through The MAGICAL 5 Phases of Healing, but didn’t stop once she was out of pain.
Sandy understood the importance of finishing her therapy (Phase 5: Performance Enhancement).
When it was all said and done she was back to yard work/gardening and being able to walk and sit without pain.
“Before physical therapy I had a lot of pain in my right hip that traveled down my leg and across the top of my foot. I was barely walking. During my evaluation the therapist taught me several exercises. Before my next visit I was pain free except when getting out of bed. I am at the end of my physical therapy visits and have no pain. I am stronger – Watch out!!! I have a good understanding of how to take care of my back thanks to MOSS!!! I now know what to do and how to do my usual activities without causing pain. I have much confidence in my physical therapists.” Sandy Aitken
KEY TAKEAWAY: Sandy acted fast once she noticed some lower back and right hip pain. Instead of “waiting it out” he was proactive and started therapy early which resulted in fewer sessions and a faster recovery.
