Knee, Success Stories August 24, 2021

I want to introduce you to Jody.

Jody is a local artist who is not a stranger to MOSS Rehabilitation Center. This is now her second time coming to us for her knee.  Earlier in the year we got her rolling along following an incident with a suitcase and escalator while she was traveling.

Most recently she tweaked her knee helping her aging parents. This increased the pain and stiffness in her knee.  With her goal of avoiding surgery and preferring the natural, drug free healing method at MOSS she came back in for a tune-up.

Jody’s story:

Jody is not a stranger to some aches and pains. She is extremely active so this is just part of the territory; however when it started to prevent her from her normal hobbies and taking care of her aging father she knew she had to address it.

In addition to addressing her issue, Jody wanted to take a natural approach to her knee pain and wanted to avoid surgery at all cost.

From a recent Harvard Medical blog they state: “results raise the concern that arthroscopy increases the chances that arthritis will progress and knee replacement will be needed.” Click here to read more.

Jody had worked with the team at MOSS Rehabilitation Center in the past and was happy with her results so she decided to return.

Jody’s pain was not the worst we have seen but it still prevented her from doing the things she wanted to do and robbed her of her confidence to take care of her father, exercise or walk for prolonged periods of time.

She reported one fall (without injury) but stated the knee felt weak and unstable at times.

Her pain was dull and achy at rest, and worse with steps, stairs, prolonged walking, standing and squatting.

This stopped her dead in her tracks, when it came to exercising and standing to paint (which is one of her many hobbies) seemed impossible.

Her biggest concern at this point was being able to help her dad around the house and take him to doctor visits. All of the walking, helping him transfer and pushing him in the wheelchair just seemed to aggravate her knee pain.

She only took over the counter medications when the pain became too intense, otherwise she relied on hot/cold packs and essential oils for the stiffness and achiness.

She had an MRI on the knee which revealed a small tear in the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus (back, outside of the knee), but she felt the problem was mild enough and truly wanted to avoid surgery.

The first step on the road to recovery for Jody was to reduce the local pain and inflammation in her knee and then work on her mobility and strength.

She did have some mild weakness that was addressed along with the inability to fully straighten her knee, which was starting to throw off the way she was walking and irritating her hip and lower back.

When Jody finished therapy she had full knee mobility and strength. This allowed her the freedom to continue with her daily exercise routine, standing while painting and most importantly taking care of her dad.

“After already graduating and then having to come back because of my own ineptness. The group at Moss has done it again! I had a torn meniscus and they’ve managed to get full extension and strength back in my knee. I really appreciate everyone here. They really have your best interest at heart, even when they give you the highest weight and set the total gym at the top! Thank you!!!”

KEY TAKEAWAY:

Because Jody had prior success with MOSS along with a strong desire to avoid surgery, she came to us as soon as something did not feel “right”.

Jody was proactive and started therapy early which allowed us to get her back on her feet faster while continuing to care for her dad. Had she tried to “wait it out” it would have taken longer for her to get the result she was looking for.
